In a season full of flooding, snowing, and ice storms (oh my!), sicknesses, fighting with insurance, losing power, remote learning, rebuilding, relocating, grieving, mothering two kiddos whose worlds were turned upside down, walking through trauma with flood victims while still processing our own, and working full time… I find myself a bit weary.
And by “a bit weary,” I mean the bone-tired, falling-asleep-while-standing kind of weary.
Some days, I’m ready to throw in the towel. Give up the good fight. Raise the white flag. Call it quits and go hibernate until summer finally arrives.
I know I’m not the only one overwhelmed by the things in front of me, even if your list looks different than mine, so I wanted to share a word of encouragement.
In my quiet time with the Lord, I sought out Galatians 6:9.
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
One commentary describes this weariness as the kind a woman goes through in labor, right before delivery. It’s a time when the work is hard and painful but also unfinished and unrewarded. We must not give up.
Often, Kingdom work is not made up of great acts but small acts done with great love. Whether it’s being present with your children, or investing in people, or offering your skillsets, or serving your spouse, or teaching an online classroom of distracted students, or prioritizing time to sit with God—when it’s a labor of love done in His Name, it is not without meaning or purpose. Even when it goes unseen, unnoticed, or unappreciated. Even when you haven’t yet seen the fruit.
We can’t always choose the field, soften the soil, or control the weather—but we can faithfully continue sowing.
One day at a time.
Don’t lose heart.
The harvest is promised.
