Taste and See

“I want to know Jesus, and I want to break my addictions, but Christianity sounds kind of boring. I don’t know if I want to give up everything that makes me happy, and I’m not sure I can make myself read the Bible all the time. I don’t know if I can do this.”

That was my thought process when I heard the altar call:
I don’t know if I can do this.

And, as it turns out, I couldn’t.

But Jesus said:
Just come to Me.

Because here’s the truth:

I couldn’t know what true joy was until I experienced it. Only then did I realize that what I thought was happiness was a counterfeit of the real thing.

I couldn’t know what would truly feed my soul until I decided to “taste and see.” Only when it started transforming my life did reading my Bible turn from a discipline into a desire.

I couldn’t resist the desires of my flesh until I had the power of the Holy Spirit inside of me. Only then did I understand there was a war going on, and I needed Jesus to help me put on my armor, hand me my sword, and teach me how to fight.

And, for those wondering? Choosing to wage war on behalf of the Kingdom of God is far from boring.

If you want to know Jesus—or if you are looking for someone to finally fix that hole in your soul that you feel no matter how much you laugh, or smile, or pretend you’re fine—don’t worry about whether or not you can do it.

You can’t. That’s kind of the point.

Just come to Him.

Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.

Psalm 34:8
